What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves using relaxing medications to help you rest during dental procedures. If you struggle to get through dental work due to anxiety, dental phobias, or a low pain threshold, sedation dentistry allows you to get the care you need. The primary goal of sedation dentistry is to create a more comfortable and stress-free experience for you.

Burbank Dental Studio prioritizes holistic care that focuses on gentle dentistry. With a commitment to your well-being, Burbank Dental Studio provides a calming environment and personalized sedation options to ensure that your dental experience effectively addresses your oral health needs while promoting relaxation.

Your comfort and peace of mind are central to the practice’s mission of delivering comprehensive and compassionate dental care.

Are there different types of sedation in dentistry?

There are three main types of sedation Dr. Annie may recommend at Burbank Dental Studio:

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide, commonly called "laughing gas," is a mild sedative administered through a mask placed over your nose. It induces relaxation and reduces anxiety, allowing you to remain conscious and responsive throughout your procedure.

Oral sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed sedative medication by mouth before your dental procedure. This form of sedation ranges from mild to moderate, providing a calming effect and reducing anxiety. While you remain conscious, the sedative helps you feel more relaxed during the treatment.

Intravenous (IV) sedation

IV sedation involves administering sedative drugs directly into your bloodstream through a vein. This form of sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation, making you less aware of the surroundings and the dental procedure. Your dentist may only recommend this type of sedation for more complex or lengthy treatments.

Who should consider sedation dentistry?

You can benefit from sedation dentistry’s calming effects if you have:

  • Dental anxiety
  • A low pain threshold
  • The need for a complex dental procedure
  • A sensitive gag reflex
  • Physical, mental, or behavioral special needs
  • Multiple procedures in a single visit

If you’re putting off scheduling a dental visit due to any of these reasons, talk to the experts at Burbank Dental Studio about sedation dentistry.

Can I drive after sedation dentistry?

You can only drive yourself home after nitrous oxide. Every other sedation technique requires you to have a trusted person to drive you home after your visit.
